I Can Purl A Rainbow (Scrunchie)

In case you couldn't tell, I thoroughly enjoy making these knitted scrunchies!!

This is the third scrunchie I have made - you can see the previous two by clicking the links:

When I created the last knitted scrunchie (the other Rainbow scrunchie), I couldn't decide which side I liked the look of the most: knit side out or purl side out.

I eventually decided on Knit side out when I realised I had more than enough yarn to make another scrunchie with.

So that's what I did - I made another scrunchie using the same yarn and technique, just changing which side was facing out.

This project was a lot easier this time round, as I already had the feel for the project from already completing it. It saved me from having to experiment and restart the way I did the first time around.

In order to make the pattern work most effectively while making the first scrunchie, I had to do a lot of experimenting and tweaking the pattern. Things I had to work out or change included:

  • The number of stitches (it needed to be a multiple of 3, but one that was easy and manageable),

  • Work out the most effective cast-on technique,

  • Work out the best starting place in terms of colours,

  • Work out which row to start the long-tailed stitches from, and more.

I used the Long-tailed cast on method for this project, and worked it in the round: starting from the purple edge.

I completed this project the same way that I completed the other scrunchies - wrapping my knitted work around a hairband (although an elastic band would work), with the knit side facing in, without casting off the stitches.

I sewed the cast on and "cast off" edge together - only "casting the stitches off" the needle when running the finishing yarn through the stitch.

This worked well for my previous scrunchies, so I stuck with using this technique. Also it is difficult experimenting with the cast-off/finishing of a project, as one failed experiment could result in you having to start again from the beginning of the project.

I had a lot of fun making all my scrunchies and I cannot wait to make more!

Which is your favourite: knit side or purl side?
